Haiti - Life in Port-au-Prince on $200 a year

The unemployment rate in Haiti is over 50 percent. The average income per capita is under $200. The main function of school, for those children lucky enough to go to school, is often to give them their one meal of the day. These nine children and their parents and aunt live in this one-room house in Port-au-Prince. Their father works as a translator, and his income is well above the average.

This photograph was taken blind. There was an electrical blackout that night in the neighborhood, and I could not see my subjects (except for the moment of the camera flash)
